Biography

 

Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik is a research advisor at the Slovenian Migration Institute at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Ljubljana. She is also an associate professor at the University of Nova Gorica and a visiting professor at the University of Stavanger. She is a sociologist, and her main study interests are the sociology of education as well as migrant and women's studies.

 

A more detailed list of her research interests includes school reform policies, citizen’s education and human rights - latterly in the context of migrant integration. In the field of women's studies she explores gender inequalities, looking at historical cases of the erased, and the socially and politically important women in Slovenia and at women migrants. In the context of migration studies she is interested in transdisciplinary approaches – historical, sociological and feminist – and innovative methodology, ranging from oral history to analyses of family correspondence and auto/ biographical texts. 

 

She is the co-author of the book Šolska reforma je papirnati tiger (1986), the author of Šolstvo in učiteljice na Slovenskem  (1994) and the accompanying studies in Zbrana dela Angele Vode (1998-2000), the co-editor of Krila migracij, Po meri življenjskih zgodb(2009), Medkulturni odnosi kot aktivno državljanstvo (2011) and Going Places, Slovenian Women's Stories on Migration (2014); the author of the book IN-IN. Življenjske zgodbe o sestavljenih identitetah (2011) as well as a number of articles published at home and abroad. Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik is also the screenwriter of the documentary Američanke (2006) and the co-curator of the exhibition Dosežki slovenskih izseljencev in njihovih potomcev v Združenih državah Amerike – prispevek kulturam dveh domovin (2011).
