Biography

 

Boštjan Kavčič was born in 1973 in Šempeter near Gorica. He attended elementary school in Tolmin, and the secondary school for electrical engineering in Nova Gorica. He graduated in Banking and Finance from the Maribor Faculty of Economics and Business in 1997.

Because of his great love of art, he was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1998, receiving the Prešeren Student Award for Sculpture in 2001. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in Sculpture in 2003 under the mentorship of Prof. Lujo Vodopivec, before becoming a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture for his postgraduate studies in Video between 2003 and 2005 at the same Academy. His master’s degree, mentored by Prof. Srečo Dragan, was awarded to him in 2007, entitled Digital Video Sculpture Inside Shopping Centres. In 2008, he received the Purchase Award from the KD Holding company. Between 2010 and 2011 he was involved in making documentary films (editing, image, design, drawing, animation): The Psalm of Silence 2010, Iconotheca Valvasoriana 2010, We’re Building a New World 2011 and the animated cartoon series Eccola! 2011. He has presented his work in numerous group and solo exhibitions, has participated in many international symposia and has installed several public works. He has also organized numerous workshops in stone carving and video art.

Since 2007, he has been working as a self-employed artist, accredited by the Ministry of Culture. His work is concerned with the connections between social sculpture and new media. Since 2002, he has been creating his biggest series of stone sculptures entitled ORGanisms. His works have been included in the AS Gallery (KD Artes) sculpture collection, the Maribor Art Gallery sculpture collection and the DIVA digital archive.
