Synopsis

All people are equal! On the basis of reality - and the ultimately ridiculous vacuity of this slogan - Stacy Makishi, the Hawaiian-born British multiple-artist, is engaged in research into »equality« at the most exposed places: at the boundaries which separate the countries of »wealth and freedom« from the remaining two-thirds of the world. You Are Here… But Where Am I? is a performance exploring the ways in which state borders construct boundaries between people. Makishi transports the audience into a reality show of border control, with questioning and isolation based on the »wrong« passport. Together with local volunteers – all of whom have specific migrant experience – she will perform a contemporary portrayal of scenes at the border. The audience, deprived of the privilege of an EU passport, will co-create their new passport. Do not expect some simulation. Prepare to be deprived of ordinary rights; your experience will be tailored by the experiences of »immigrant« fellow citizens of Slovenia. Conceived by Stacy Makishi’s own experience of border procedures, the performance You Are Here… But Where Am I? had its premiere at the 2002 Liverpool Biennial.
